How to be a Winner

By   Roy Beasley

Caleb was one of the twelve spies who was sent into Canaan as a spy. All of them brought back an evil report except for Caleb and Joshua. They were fearful because of giants in the land and great walled cities. But, Caleb and Joshua knew they could do it with God's help, and urged the people to proceed immediately. But, they listened to the majority, and this resulted in them having to wander in the wilderness for forty years until all of that generation had died except for Caleb and Joshua.

Caleb was forty years old when this happened, but now let us "fast-forward". Now he was 85, but he was not ready to retire. He said, "I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out and to come in." (Joshua 14:11). He requested Hebron for an inheritance, the very mountain where they had seen the giants and the walled cities. And Caleb did what he knew was possible with God's help forty year before. He and his warriors drove out the inhabitants of the mountain and took the land.

How, then can you distinguish between winners and losers? They often look the same. They dress alike, shop the same stores, and live in the same neighborhoods. Success comes in all types of personalities, all professions, all colors of skin, all heights and weights. Here's how:

First, Attitude. Caleb's attitude was different from the ordinary. He did not think like the others. He didn't think of failure - only success. "With God's help we can do it!"

Second, Positive Thinking. Caleb was willing to make a personal commitment. They accept responsibility. Winners expect to succeed. They use their creative abilities. They never quit.

You, like Caleb, can become a winner. Begin changing your life by changing your attitude. You may have a negative attitude like the ten spies. You need to develop a positive attitude like Caleb. You begin by clearly identifying the new attitude you wish to develop and start to work on it. Prepare affirmations to help you change your old habits of thinking. Work on this every day.

Third, set goals. Caleb had a goal - conquer Hebron, and he achieved that goal although he was past 85! What bout my goals? Are my goals high enough to challenge the best within me? Or, are my goals too high so that it becomes discouraging? Am I using my full God-given potential of knowledge and ability? Am I tracking my daily progress toward my goal? Do I have negative thoughts? Do I secretly, in the back of my mind, believe that I cannot reach my goals or that somehow I am unworthy? Have I broken my goals down to small steps? If my goal seems too high at first glance, I need to break it down to smaller steps.

Here are some other characteristics of a winner like Caleb.
  1. Winners are always striving to reach little higher.
  2. Winners are always above. average.
  3. The progress of winners is, always forward. They never look back.
  4. Winners always bounce back after failure. They get knocked down time after time, but always get right back up. That's the difference' between a winner and a loser.

Yes, you too can be a winner like Caleb.
