What is a Nation Without God?

By   Roy Beasley

Lazarus M. Wanjala, a preacher in Kenya loves his country, but in a recent letter, he laments its moral and spiritual decline. He wrote:

  1. There's AIDS on a large scale - people are dying of it.
  2. Robbery by violence is practiced largely.
  3. The DEVIL-WORSHIPERS are. . in Kenya on a certain scale.
  4. Famine in Kenya is great.
  5. Everything in Kenya is very high.
  6. People are stealing children and selling them to the devil worshippers to suck their blood.

This a graphic description of A NATION WITHOUT GOD - a nation IN BONDAGE TO SATAN. It is one of the Third World countries that we are trying desperately to evangelize because of the promise of Jesus: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (Jno. 8:32)

Would you want to live in a country without God? Would you want to rear a family in such a climate? The question, of course, is rhetorical. No one wants that. But the truth is that we may be closer to that situation than most of us realize.

Robert H. Bork calls it Slouching towards Gomorrah. In his book by this title (Regan Press, 1996), he explores the dark side of modern American culture and describes the damaging effect, beginning in the 1960's, that liberal thought has had upon our nation. His conclusions are disturbing. He says that instead of returning to Bethlehem, we are headed toward Gomorrah. He pictures our nation as being in decline, resulting in serious moral trouble, and that its foundation is crumbling.

Morals continue to sink lower and lower. It has adversely affected even the highest levels of government. Political leaders often seem to feel that they are accountable to no one for their actions. Deceit and corruption among our leaders is often overlooked and seems to even come to be expected as normal behavior. In the 1962 Supreme Court decision, prayer and reading of the Bible were removed from the school room. Since then illegitimacy and the crime rate have soared. Statistics show that the average of violent offenders continues to be younger and younger.

The wholesale slaughter of unborn children is legalized under the guise of "women's rights" . Borak observes that since the Supreme Court's decision in 1973 in the case of Roe v. Wade, there have perhaps been more than 30 million abortions in the United States. In a letter written by a Roman soldier to his wife who was expecting, he instructed her that if it were a boy, keep it, but if it was a girl throw it out. It was customary to put newly born babies that were not wanted outside in the garbage to die. We think of such as barbaric. What's the difference? Both are taking a life.

Atheism continues to have a devastating influence upon our society. Prayer and Bible reading have been removed from the school room. The Ten Commandments were removed from public display in a court house in Alabama. The U. S. Supreme Court is presently considering removing the mention of God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Even the public mention of God, and especially of Christ, by an individual is not considered "politically correct'. The popularity of Mel Gibson's movie The Passion as well as other Bible themes indicates to me that the desire of the majority of the American people is still back to God and His righteousness - our only hope.
